Your Journey

Day 1

Welcome to South Africa! Arrive Johannesburg and transfer to your hotel in Johannesburg for overnight.

TIP Add an extra night and take a 4 hour cycle tour of Soweto

Day 2-3

Journey to the African bush and a private game lodge near Bandelierkop (5 hour drive) where you spend the next two nights. The Lodge has a wide variety of non-dangerous animals including Giraffe, Impala, Zebra, Kudu and many bird species. Our aim with this safari cycle is to have personal encounters with some of the animals of the African Bush. In the evening enjoy dinner in the atmosphere of the typical African boma (fire pit).

Cycling 25 km +180m

Day 4: Kudu Valley and a Bapedi Village

Today is the “King of the Mountain stage” which involves a 790m climb. Enjoy a marvellous picnic lunch at the top surveying the valley. Return through a Bapedi village where you will experience the daily rhythm of a rural African village. Our ride ends at a local shebeen (African bar) to enjoy a cold one.

Cycling 55 km + 1160m

Day 5: Wolkberg Mountains

The Wolkberg Mountains separate the highveld from the lowveld of Limpopo. Cycle through farmland of avocado and macadamia nut orchards with splendid views of the mountains.

Cycling 15 - 45 km +650m

Day 6: Blyde Dam and the Kruger National Park

Today bike along the Blyde River to the viewpoint of the Blyde Dam. Along the way be on the lookout for kudus and baboons. Take a boat cruise on the Blyde Dam where you may spot hippo's and crocodiles. The backdrop is the amazing 'Three Rondavels'. After lunch head for the Kruger National Park.

Cycling 37 km +410m

Day 7: Kruger National Park

Spend the day game-viewing in one of Africa's largest national parks, renowned for the Big 5 (African elephant, Black rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, African lion, African leopard).

Day 8: Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve

Cycle to the world's third largest and greenest canyon. Start with the magnificent view from Pinnacle Rock, followed by Wonder View, a spectacular waterfall and Bourke's Luck potholes which have been formed by water from the Treur and Blyde River. The Three Rondavels lookout point is a highpoint of the day. Our overnight accommodation overlooks this escarpment.

Cycling 40 km +620m

Day 9: Echo Caves

This last route of cycling is amongst orange groves and mostly downhill. Visit Echo Caves, an underground wonderland then drive along the Erasmus Pass to your accommodation. A late afternoon game drive continues the adventure followed by dinner round the 'boma' with the sounds of the African night in the background.

Day 10

Start the day with a bush walk in Big 5 territory accompanied by an experienced game ranger. After a leisurely breakfast it's time to say farewell. You can depart from Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit (transfer included) or take a shuttle transfer (6 hrs) to Johannesburg (not included).

SAFARI CAMP EXTENSION - 3 options

3 days/2 nights stay at a safari camp in the Big 5 game reserve of Manyeleti which shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand and Timbavati - a real African bush experience! Two game drives per day are included, all meals, refreshments at the 5* camp and transfers to and from the camps/lodges.

GRADE

Moderate - a good level of fitness is required. Biking on gravel and paved roads with little traffic at a relaxed pace. A support vehicle is on hand. Please note cycling is in areas where wild animals roam but no cycling within Kruger National Park. You are accompanied by a cycling guide and a nature guide.
